1 The virtual condition

The rules of cultural and political resistance have dramatically
changed. The revolution in technology brought about by
the rapid development of the computer and video has
created a new geography of power relations in the first world
that could only be imagined as little as twenty years ago:
people are reduced to data, surveillance occurs on a global
scale, minds are melded to screenal reality, and an authoritarian
power emerges that thrives on absence. The new
geography is a virtual geography, and the core of political
and cultural resistance must assert itself in this electronic
space.
The West has been preparing for this moment for 2,500
years. There has always been an idea of the virtual, whether
it was grounded in mysticism, abstract analytical thinking,
or romantic fantasy. All of these approaches have shaped
and manipulated invisible worlds accessible only through
the imagination, and in some cases these models have been
given ontological privilege. What has made contemporary
concepts and ideologies of the virtual possible is that these
preexisting systems of thought have expanded out of the
imagination, and manifested themselves in the development
and understanding of technology. The following work,
as condensed as it may be, extracts traces of the virtual from
past historical and philosophical narratives. These traces
show intertextual relationships between seemingly disparate
systems of thought that have now been recombined into
a working body of “knowledge” under the sign of technology.

A condição virtual

As regras da resistência política e cultural mudaram dramaticamente. A revolução na tecnologia, efeito do rápido desenvolvimento do computador e do vídeo, criou uma nova geografia de relações de poder no primeiro mundo que só se tornou imaginável nos últimos vinte anos: As pessoas são reduzidas a dados, a vigilância ocorre numa escala mundial, as mentalidades são combinadas numa realidade cénica, e emerge um poder autoritário que floresce em ausência. A nova geografia é uma geografia virtual, e o âmago da resistência política e cultural têm de se afirmar neste espaço electrónico
O ocidente têm vindo a preparar-se para este momento à 2500 anos. Sempre existiu uma ideia do virtual, tenha sido baseada no misticismo, no pensamento abstracto analítico ou na fantasia romântica. Todas estas tentativas de aproximação tomaram forma e manipularam em mundos visíveis somente acessíveis através da imaginação, e em alguns dos casos estes a estes modelos foi-lhe atribuído um privilegio ontológico. O que tornou possível os contemporâneos conceitos e ideologias do virtual é que estes sistemas preexistentes de pensamento expandiram-se para lá da imaginação, e manifestaram-se no desenvolvimento e na compreensão da tecnologia. O trabalho que se segue, por mais condensado que seja, extrai, das narrativas históricas e filosóficas passadas, traços ou pistas da condição virtual. Estes traços mostram relações intertextuais entre aparentes sistemas de pensamento díspares que foram agora recombinados num corpo dinâmico de conhecimento sob o signo da tecnologia.
